Rev. Judith A. Phillips, Ph.D., is President of Reyah
College. Among her responsibilities are administration of the
Center and teaching a number of the courses.
Recently, she was the Field Director
and an Instructor at Bethany College Sacramento, which she established in 1996
as a satellite of the main campus in Scotts Valley, California. She continues as
an adjunct instructor in Bethany’s on-line program.
In addition to teaching and administering, Judy leads student
study tours to biblical lands. In 1998, she first directed a student study tour
to Israel and continues to lead biblical tours to Israel, Jordan, Greece, and
Turkey.
Educationally, Judy graduated summa cum laude (4.0 Grade
Point Average) from Simpson College in 1986 with an M.A. in Bible and Theology.
She continued her education and in 1994 obtained a Ph.D. in Theology from Walden
University. Her dissertation topic was entitled, The Concept of The Holy in
the Pentateuch and Its Implications toward Wholeness of Being and Ethical
Conduct. As a result of her graduate course work, she also wrote a number of
books, which she uses as supplemental textbooks for her students.
With respect to Judy's background, she became a Christian at
the age of fifteen and immediately desired to study courses which would enable
her to learn more of God. Although her parents would not allow her to attend a
Christian college, she enrolled at Whitman College (Walla Walla, Washington) in
a liberal arts program and took the only two religious courses offered. She
attended there for one year and then married Dallas Phillips. As of August 29,
2004, they have been married 45 years and have three children, eight
grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Dallas is very supportive of Judy's
Christian studies and endeavors.
Some of Judy’s previous endeavors include directing a
District Bible Quiz Program in Northern California/Nevada, Christian Education
Director at Trinity Life Center in Sacramento, Instructor for Simpson College’s
former Sacramento program, Instructor for Capital Bible College in Sacramento,
and board member and publicity and seminar chairman for Church Leadership and
Service Seminars (C.L.A.S.S.) annual convention in Sacramento. In addition, Judy
is a licensed minister with the Assemblies of God.
On September 12, 1983, Judy believes she received a specific
call from God to teach in a Bible college, one which demonstrates academic
quality without sacrificing spiritual commitment. She believes it was a call of
God because the awareness that she should teach in Bible college was turned on
in one moment of time, and she realized, "Of course I should teach in Bible
college; why didn’t I think of that before?" It was a very strong sense
of mission, did not dissipate, and many doors opened which contributed toward
further educational preparation in graduate school when circumstances seemed
impossible. Later, she received confirmation through a Bible verse, Take heed
to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it
(Colossians 4:17). There was no doubt that this was teaching ministry.
To Judy, the teaching of sound doctrine and scriptural
foundations is very important so that Christians may be strengthened in God’s
Word, well-equipped, and ready for His use. The positive response of students to
her teaching is one confirmation to her that God has called her to the teaching
ministry. Although they state that her courses are challenging, they learn and
come back after graduation to thank her for the impact on their lives and
ministry.
Foundational to Judy’s teaching is growing in the knowledge
of God. As individuals grow in the knowledge of God and focus upon Him, they
have a strong desire to worship and praise Him. In so doing, they become more
Godlike and Christlike, which in turn provides for meaningful service in God’s
kingdom work. This is the thrust of Judy’s teaching ministry, and more and more
doors are opening for Judy to share this emphasis.
